CLEVELAND ~ Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. (NYSE: CLF) has successfully completed a hydrogen (H2) injection trial at its Middletown Works blast furnace, making it the first ever use of this carbon friendly technology in the Americas region. The trial, which was completed on May 8, 2023, saw hydrogen gas injected into all 20 tuyeres at the Middletown #3 blast furnace, replacing coke as an iron reducing agent and releasing H2O (water vapor) instead of CO2 with no impact to product quality or operating efficiency.

Lourenco Goncalves, Cliffs' Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, expressed his pride in the achievement: "We are proud to be the first Company in the Americas to inject hydrogen into a blast furnace – a demonstration of our commitment to develop and implement breakthrough technological advancements toward decarbonization. This success confirms there is a bright, sustainable and environmentally friendly future for the much needed BF-BOF steelmaking technology."

The hydrogen was delivered to the Middletown facility via existing pipeline and transportation infrastructure already in place for other uses such as annealing furnaces. The successful use of hydrogen gas represents a significant step towards decarbonizing blast furnaces which are necessary for quality-intensive steel applications such as those used by the automotive industry. Cleveland-Cliffs is already world leaders in natural gas injection and this trial further proves their ability to use green hydrogen when it becomes readily available.
