HEBRON, Ky., July 12, 2024 ~ Cincinnati, Ohio - The sort workers at DHL's global hub located at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) are demanding recognition from the company to collectively bargain a union contract. With a majority of over 1,300 sort workers supporting the idea of joining the Teamsters, they are calling for their rights to be acknowledged.
Liam Burke, a member of the CVG Sort Workers Organizing Committee, stated that he and his co-workers have demanded recognition from DHL to become Teamsters. He emphasized that a Teamsters contract would mean respect and the ability to negotiate on important issues such as favoritism, guaranteed hours, and fair pay. Burke added that they are not just numbers but human beings who deserve better treatment.
The sort workers are also demanding immediate negotiations for a Teamsters contract after DHL abruptly left over 150 full-time workers with only 24 hours' notice to either accept part-time positions or resign. This decision was made despite the company continuing to hire new employees. The workers are also calling for basic amenities such as water and working fans to combat high temperatures in the workplace. They are also seeking reinstatement of their wrongfully terminated co-workers.

Cathy Davis, another member of the CVG Sort Workers Organizing Committee, expressed her disappointment with DHL's actions. She stated that giving full-time workers only 24 hours' notice is not just unfair but inhumane. Davis added that they deserve fair treatment, safe working conditions, and job security which can be ensured through a Teamsters contract.
In January, DHL ramp and tug workers at CVG successfully negotiated their first collective bargaining agreement with the Teamsters after a 12-day strike. This historic contract provided higher wages, better benefits, and improved working conditions for these employees. Now, sort workers at CVG are organizing to secure similar benefits and job security through a Teamsters contract.
Bill Hamilton, Director of the Teamsters Express Division and Teamsters Eastern Region International Vice President, expressed his disappointment with DHL's treatment of its workers. He stated that it is unacceptable to give dedicated employees only 24 hours' notice to make such a life-changing decision. Hamilton added that the workers will be at the bargaining table with DHL one way or another and urged the company to acknowledge their right to collective bargaining immediately.
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, founded in 1903, represents 1.3 million hardworking individuals in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. The organization is committed to fighting for fair treatment and better working conditions for its members.
