~ The City of Akron's Public Art Commission is now accepting applications for four new commissioners. The deadline for applications is noon on Friday, June 23, 2023. Those chosen to serve will be expected to serve a two or three year term.
The Public Art Commission was established in 2020 to oversee the budget, strategy, collection, and administration of the Plan for Public Art. The Commission is dedicated to celebrating the cultural vitality of the people of Akron and promoting economic vibrancy throughout Akron through the integration of high-quality artwork in public places.
The Commission is made up of nine volunteer members appointed by the Mayor and approved by Akron City Council. The Commission currently meets virtually once a month and occasionally attends in-person events. Their responsibilities include acting principally in an advisory capacity to City of Akron staff and the City in any matter pertaining to public art; presenting an annual report of Commission activities; and advising and making recommendations to the City pertaining to policies and procedures as identified in the Administrative Guide; artist selection juries and process; commission and placement of artworks; and maintenance and removal of artworks.

The Commission is seeking four diverse residents from Akron who have an interest in art and a passion for their community. They are looking for representation from a variety of areas including a thespian, an artist representing areas that are not currently on the commission, a resident who has a love for art, and a person younger than 30 interested in the study of art who plans to remain in Akron throughout their term on the commission. They are also looking for more representation from residents living in wards 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 or 10.
