Custom Comfort Systems Inc. urges homeowners in historic neighborhoods to take immediate measures to protect their HVAC systems from extreme strain.
NORTH CANTON, Ohio - OhioPen -- A heatwave is arriving in North Canton this week, bringing conditions that pose a serious threat to residential air conditioning systems. With temperatures projected to reach 96 degrees on Wednesday, the combination of high heat and humidity can push many AC units to their breaking point.
Older homes are particularly vulnerable to these extreme weather conditions. Cooling systems in historic North Canton neighborhoods, such as Washington Square and Orchard Hill, are at significant risk of failure. These units frequently operate on aging infrastructure, including outdated ductwork that allows cold air to escape. As a result, the systems are forced to run continuously to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, increasing the likelihood of sudden breakdowns.
Michael Weikart, owner of Custom Comfort Systems Inc., is urging local residents to be proactive to avoid costly emergency repairs. The company, which has been serving the region since 1949 with a team of fully licensed technicians, has seen this pattern play out during previous historic heatwaves

"From our decades of serving North Canton, we know that when temperatures hover near the upper 90s, an air conditioning system has to work twice as hard, especially in homes with older, inefficient ductwork," said Weikart. "We want to help our neighbors prepare before the worst of the weather hits. A few simple tasks can help avoid a complete system failure in the middle of a dangerous heatwave."
Weikart recommends homeowners take the following steps immediately:
Homeowners experiencing issues with their cooling systems are encouraged to seek professional repair service before the peak of the heatwave arrives.

"We want to help our neighbors prepare before the worst of the weather hits. A few simple tasks can help avoid a complete system failure in the middle of a dangerous heatwave."
Weikart recommends homeowners take the following steps immediately:
- Change the Air Filter: A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing the system to work harder and increasing the risk of the evaporator coil freezing over.
- Clear the Outdoor Unit: Ensure the outdoor condenser unit is free of leaves, debris, and overgrown landscaping to allow for proper airflow and heat dispersion.
- Reduce the Cooling Load: Close blinds and curtains during the hottest parts of the day and consider raising the thermostat by a few degrees to alleviate continuous strain on the system.
- Monitor for Warning Signs: Pay attention to early indicators of system failure, such as unusual grinding or squealing noises, weak airflow, or warm air blowing from the vents.
Homeowners experiencing issues with their cooling systems are encouraged to seek professional repair service before the peak of the heatwave arrives.
