~ On June 1, 2023, Mayor Horrigan of Akron, Ohio hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of renovations at Firestone Stadium. The $1.47M investment included upgrades to 4 restrooms, new HVAC for the entire structure, painting inside the building, renovation of the concession areas, installation of LED lighting throughout the stadium and a new perimeter fence. Additionally, two new artificial turf fields were installed utilizing FieldTurf's Triple Threat Natural Turf.
At the event, Mayor Horrigan said "Firestone Stadium has such a rich history in this community that dates back nearly 100 years. This investment means that we can continue to provide outstanding accommodations to our area's athletes for many more years to come." Other speakers included Ward 7 Councilperson Donnie Kammer, Senior Vice President Product Development from Bridgestone Americas Dr. Hans Dorfi and Executive Director of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Doug Ute.

The City of Akron and Akron Recreation and Parks have been hosting the Girl's State Softball Championships since 2008 at Firestone Stadium and this year's tournament kicked off today with the Johnstown Johnnies facing off against the Indian Lake Lakers. The stadium was built in 1925 by Firestone Tire and Rubber Company for company baseball and was dedicated on July 25th by Harvey S. Firestone himself. It was owned and operated by Firestone until it was donated to the City of Akron in 1988 and has been home to many teams through the years including Cleveland Comets, Akron Racers and Ohio Pride. Babe Ruth even hit at least one homer out of the stadium during an exhibition game!
All contractors involved with this project include FieldTurf, Vasco, Fence Enterprises, Pro Door and Security, Wims Painting and Lawn Service, Majesticoat Epoxy Flooring, Akron Cultured Marble Kane Painting and Spanky's Flooring as well as Kenmore Construction who donated labor and equipment for site preparation and grading.
The renovations mark an important milestone in preserving Firestone Stadium's legacy as well as providing outstanding accommodations for athletes in Akron for many more years to come!
