The City of Akron and Akron Recreation and Parks have been hosting the Girl's State Softball Championships since 2008 at Firestone Stadium and this year's tournament kicked off today with the Johnstown Johnnies facing off against the Indian Lake Lakers. The stadium was built in 1925 by Firestone Tire and Rubber Company for company baseball and was dedicated on July 25th by Harvey S. Firestone himself. It was owned and operated by Firestone until it was donated to the City of Akron in 1988 and has been home to many teams through the years including Cleveland Comets, Akron Racers and Ohio Pride. Babe Ruth even hit at least one homer out of the stadium during an exhibition game!

All contractors involved with this project include FieldTurf, Vasco, Fence Enterprises, Pro Door and Security, Wims Painting and Lawn Service, Majesticoat Epoxy Flooring, Akron Cultured Marble Kane Painting and Spanky's Flooring as well as Kenmore Construction who donated labor and equipment for site preparation and grading.

The renovations mark an important milestone in preserving Firestone Stadium's legacy as well as providing outstanding accommodations for athletes in Akron for many more years to come!
