~ The City of Akron is now accepting applications for the position of Police Officer through September 8, 2023. Mayor Dan Horrigan said that serving the residents of this city as a police officer is among the most challenging and rewarding calls to public service. The City is looking to hire officers who reflect the citizens of their community and have a passion for public service and the residents of Akron.

The next exam is planned for the Fall of 2023 and will generate an eligible list that will remain in place for 18 months. Candidates must meet several baseline qualifications to be eligible, including being between 20.5 - 45 years old by the application closing date, having a high school diploma or GED, having a valid driver's license, and being a United States Citizen or having a valid permanent resident card.

In addition to passing written tests, physical fitness test, background investigation, and polygraph examination, candidates must also pass a medical and psychological evaluation after receiving a conditional job offer in order to be selected. Bonus points are awarded to those candidates who pass the written test and meet residency requirements, have served in active duty in the armed forces of the United States for more than 180 days and were honorably discharged, have completed accredited college course work, or have successfully completed a Peace Officer Basic Training Academy approved by the OPOTC.

Compensation for an entry level police officer begins at $30.61 per hour ($63,668.80 annually) with generous benefits package consisting of medical and prescription coverage, dental and vision insurance, life insurance at no cost, paid vacation time, sick leave, and paid holidays. Additionally new officers are eligible for a $2,000 sign on bonus.
