HISTORIC 10 ~ The 2025 Women's Decathlon World Championships took place this past weekend at the SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio, and it was a groundbreaking event for gender equality in sports. Despite being able to compete in all individual track and field events, women are still not allowed to participate in the decathlon at the international level. However, this athlete-led World Championship event, now in its second year, is determined to change that.

Sponsored by Skyview Ventures, Play Gap, Hettas, and Vault Athletics, the competition saw athletes from around the world come together to showcase their skills in ten running, jumping and throwing events. And it was Nikki Boon of the Netherlands who emerged as the champion and claimed the title of "World's Greatest Athlete." Boon set a national record for her country with a final score of 7,451 points and also secured her spot on the all-time world list at 10th place.

Following closely behind Boon were USA's Katie Straus and Jordyn Bruce who took home silver and bronze medals with scores of 7,301 and 7,272 points respectively. The podium finishers were ecstatic about their achievements and what it means for women's sports.

Boon expressed her gratitude for being able to compete in a decathlon as she had always dreamed of doing so since she was young. She also acknowledged the significance of this event for women's sports and hopes that it will pave the way for more opportunities for female athletes to compete in decathlons.

Event organizer Lauren Kuntz echoed Boon's sentiments about breaking barriers for women in sports. As an American decathlete herself and founder of Ico For All - a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting gender equity in sports - Kuntz believes that women belong on the international stage when it comes to decathlons.

The success of this year's Women's Decathlon World Championships has only fueled the determination of these athletes to continue pushing for a women's decathlon event in the 2032 Olympics. As Kuntz stated, they are no longer waiting for permission and are taking matters into their own hands by creating their own playing field.
