COLUMBUS, Ohio, July 28, 2025 ~ As the month of August approaches, pet owners are reminded to be aware of their furry companions' skin health. With warmer weather comes more outdoor time for pets, increasing their exposure to environmental allergens. This is why August is recognized as Itchy Pet Awareness Month.

Skin allergies are a common concern for many pet owners and can manifest in various forms in dogs and cats. These allergies can cause discomfort and, if left untreated, potentially serious health issues. As loving pet parents, it is important to recognize and manage these allergies to ensure our four-legged family members remain happy and healthy.

According to Nationwide Pet Insurance, skin allergies have been the top claim among insured dogs for 13 consecutive years. In 2024 alone, Nationwide received over 450,000 individual claims for skin allergies in dogs and cats, representing a 13% increase from the previous year. Skin allergies accounted for 16% of all dog-related claims in 2024 and are also among the Top 10 most common claims for cats insured by Nationwide Pet.

The financial impact of skin allergies can be significant. For dogs, the average cost within the first 30 days after diagnosis is $266, but this number can reach up to $841 after one year. For cats, the average cost within the first 30 days after diagnosis is $318 and can reach up to $592 after one year.

It's important for pet owners to understand that allergies can be triggered by a variety of sources such as pollen, dust mites, certain foods, and even flea bites. Common symptoms include persistent itching, redness or inflammation of the skin, and skin infections due to excessive scratching. If these symptoms are noticed in your pet, it's crucial to consult with a veterinarian who can assess their condition and recommend appropriate treatment.

Dr. Emily Tincher, Chief Veterinary Officer at Nationwide Pet Insurance states that "itchy skin is the most common condition we see affecting dogs. Often, when a pet is diagnosed with skin allergies, it is a chronic condition that requires ongoing care." She also emphasizes the financial impact of chronic conditions and encourages pet owners to plan and navigate these challenges to ensure their pets receive the necessary care.

While it is uncommon, allergic reactions can escalate into a life-threatening emergency if they progress to anaphylaxis. This can be characterized by symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or collapse. If your pet shows signs of an allergic reaction, especially facial swelling or other severe symptoms, it's important to seek immediate veterinary care. Early detection and treatment are crucial for successful management.

To help prevent allergy flare-ups in pets, there are proactive steps that pet owners can take. These include reducing indoor allergens by frequently vacuuming and sanitizing their dog's living area and washing pet bedding weekly to minimize dust mites. Limiting outdoor exposure by avoiding leaf piles and tall grasses and wiping your pet's paws after walks can also help remove pollen, ragweed, mold spores, and other substances. Regular bathing and grooming with a pet-safe hypoallergenic shampoo can also aid in early detection of skin irritation.
