ERLANGER, Ky., Aug. 7, 2024 ~ In a major win for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, a federal judge has ruled that the union is allowed to picket at the Amazon Air Hub located at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport without interference. This decision comes after the Kenton County Airport Board, which controls the airport, had previously blocked demonstrations by the Teamsters against Amazon.
The ruling, made by the US District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky on Wednesday, stated that the airport board could not restrict workers' right to free speech. This decision was prompted by the union's request for an injunction after their permit to picket was denied in July.
Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien expressed his satisfaction with the court's decision, stating that it is a significant victory for Amazon workers not only in Northern Kentucky but also across the country. He emphasized that Amazon workers are coming together to join the Teamsters and fight for their rights and protections against this trillion-dollar corporation.

The Teamsters have been actively organizing and holding pickets and rallies around KCVG this summer through their local chapter in Louisville. However, their permit was denied by the airport board who claimed that the roadside site was not approved for demonstrations. With this week's ruling, the District Court has ordered the board to allow picketing on sidewalks and other public easements around KCVG.
This victory comes at a time when more and more Amazon workers are standing up against unfair labor practices. Last month, over 100 Amazon drivers in Skokie, Illinois went on strike and have since been organizing with other Amazon workers in New York and California. In June, 5,500 members of the Amazon Labor Union voted to affiliate with the Teamsters with an overwhelming majority of 98.3 percent. This affiliation brings powerful resources to warehouse workers as they demand strong first contracts.
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters was founded in 1903 and currently represents 1.3 million hardworking people in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. With this recent victory, the union plans to carry this precedent to other communities where Amazon is exploiting loopholes and breaking laws to take advantage of workers.
