~ Columbus, OH - The City of Columbus has announced the implementation of Next Generation 911 technologies, aimed at improving the safety and protection of its residents and businesses. These new advancements include video-sharing and AI-powered text translation capabilities, which will not only support emergency response but also provide more equitable access to 911 services.
One of the most notable features is the Text-2-911 Translation tool, which allows residents to text 911 in their native language. This technology automatically detects the language of incoming texts and provides accurate translations in 55 languages. As the 911 Call Taker responds in English, the resident will receive the response in their preferred language. However, it should be noted that this feature may only be available for certain mobile carriers and for Latin-based languages. In cases where verbal communication is necessary, the 911 Center will continue to utilize the Language Line translation service.

Additionally, the new Video to 911 capabilities allow Call Takers to send a link to a caller's phone and gain access to their device's camera with their consent. This can provide crucial context for first responders when responding to emergencies such as fires or car accidents. To protect the privacy of callers, once the call ends, so does access to their device. The link cannot be reactivated.
Mayor Andrew J. Ginther expressed his belief that no one should be unable to call for help when they need it most and believes these inclusive technologies will make Columbus an even safer and stronger city by providing more equitable access to emergency services.
Ken Coontz, Administrator of Division of Support Services, emphasized the importance of removing communication barriers during emergency situations as every second counts. He believes these advancements will be invaluable for interacting with non-English speakers, individuals with disabilities or impairments, as well as those who may not be able to communicate verbally due to background noise or safety concerns.
