Published: 08-24-2021
Akron, Ohio, August 24, 2021 — Akron's Firestone Stadium has a rich history of hosting world class softball tournaments and community events. Dedicated in 1925 by Harvey Firestone, it was owned and operated by the Firestone Company until it was donated to the City of Akron in 1988. Today, the City of Akron is announcing that it will once again be managing operations at the Firestone Stadium directly, and will no longer utilize a third party operator.

The City of Akron will now be managing the youth, amateur, high school, and collegiate softball events directly through the City of Akron Recreation and Parks Bureau. All of the well-loved annual events will continue and new programming is expected to be added. The Akron Racers National Pro Fastpitch team left Firestone Stadium four years ago to become the Cleveland Comets.
"The City of Akron is fully committed to supporting sports and programming at the stadium including community favorites such as the OHSAA State Girls Softball Tournament," Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan said. "In fact, this move is designed to allow us to further expand programming while saving money. We look forward to continuing to build upon Firestone Stadium's rich history for the benefit of the Akron community."
