African American author Terreece M. Clarke will use the award to amplify her voice in publishing specifically contemporary romance and romantic suspense.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - OhioPen -- The Greater Columbus Arts Council recently named novelist Terreece M. Clarke as a summer recipient of an Individual Artist Grant. The grant, with an award amount up to $1,200, is designed to assist artists with the cost of materials, supplies, and resources used to create new work, professional development, or learning opportunities and/or marketing or promotional expenses.
"I am so grateful to the Arts Council for this grant and their support. As an independent author, building a platform is essential for success and this grant will help me create a solid foundation and amplify my work," author Terreece M. Clarke said. "I am a passionate advocate for diversity in literature and my books reflect that. Having the support of the Arts Council, Art Makes Columbus, Mayor Andrew Ginther, Columbus City Council, and the Franklin County Board of Commissioners is further validation of my vision and most importantly, helps me reach those who feel underrepresented in publishing."

Clarke plans to use the funds to support her novel Heartbeat, A Courageous Love Novel [https://terreececlarke.com] "This is my first novel in this genre [contemporary romantic suspense], and chose to publish independently in order to be involved in every part of the process. Many indie authors, especially authors of color, find themselves at a disadvantage in the marketplace because capital for essential expenses is simply not available. In turn, incredible books never reach their full audience or compete on equitable ground in popular genres. There is definitely a market for BIPOC voices, however, you have to be able to reach that market."
Clarke, while new to the romance genre, already has a bestselling children's book, "Olivia's Potty Adventures" released in 2018 that spent 16 weeks as a #1 Amazon New Release and 18 additional weeks in the top 20 spot in two categories. The book has a new publisher and will release a new edition late this summer. Additionally, Clarke has three books upcoming in the Courageous Love Novel series.
