MILWAUKEE, Sept. 17, 2025 ~ As the doors of the Franklin County Crisis Care Center opened to patients this month, it marked a significant milestone in addressing long-standing service gaps in behavioral health in Central Ohio. The 72,000-square-foot facility, funded by the Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board of Franklin County (ADAMH) and operated by Recovery Innovations, offers comprehensive mental health and addiction crisis services.
The center serves as a centralized hub for individuals experiencing mental health or addiction crises, providing immediate and compassionate care through its "no-wrong-door" model. It features a 24/7 urgent care walk-in clinic, a 23-hour observation unit, a 16-bed inpatient unit, substance use disorder treatment, medical and pharmacy services, family support and discharge planning, as well as administrative and linkage services.
One of the standout features of the facility is its EmPATH (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment Treatment and Healing) unit. This specialized unit offers a calm and supportive environment for individuals in crisis, diverting them away from emergency departments and into psychiatric care. With its round-the-clock availability, the EmPATH unit provides rapid evaluations and stabilization in a therapeutic setting.

Hammes, a national real estate consulting firm with expertise in development, investment and management, played an integral role in bringing this project to fruition. Serving as Franklin County's project manager and owner's representative for the project, Hammes guided site validation, program development, design and construction planning, as well as stakeholder coordination. They also led the selection process for the architect (NBBJ) and construction manager (Elford).
Adam Novak, Vice President of Hammes Healthcare expressed his pride in being part of such a transformative project. "This project exemplifies what is possible when government agencies, healthcare providers and community partners come together with a shared purpose," he said.
Prior to the opening of the Franklin County Crisis Care Center, there were only 10 observation units in Franklin County. With the new facility, capacity has expanded to 60 units, significantly improving access to care for those in need.
The innovative approach of the Franklin County Crisis Care Center has already garnered national recognition, positioning Franklin County as a leader in behavioral health service delivery. This achievement is a testament to the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders involved and showcases the potential for positive change when working towards a common goal.
