City of Akron Press Release
From the desk of City of Akron Press Office
Published: 09-22-2021
Akron, Ohio, September 22, 2021 — This year, the City of Akron's annual celebration of Halloween will take place on Saturday, October 30. Akron residents who wish to participate in "Trick or Treat Night" may show their support by turning on their porch lights between the hours of 5 pm and 7 pm that evening. Akron police patrols will pay special attention to children and families walking city neighborhoods to promote a safe and successful celebration for all. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to use caution and to always follow current guidance from our medical experts.
Mayor Dan Horrigan said, "Trick or Treat provides a wonderful opportunity for our children to get outside and enjoy our Akron neighborhoods. Our community, and particularly our young students, have endured significant upheaval the last few years and this is one night where our community can bond in the spirit of fun and celebrate the season. Please be cautious, look out for one another, and follow current guidelines to limit the spread of COVID-19 in our community. And if you or your eligible children haven't been vaccinated yet, there is still time to be fully immunized against COVID-19 before Halloween night!"

Here are some Trick or Treat Safety Tips for Akron families:
- Stay on the Sidewalk
You will often see crowds of families walking through the streets during Trick or Treat. While it may seem safe, it's better to stay on the sidewalk with your children. You don't want to risk the chance of being overlooked by a driver. - Be Attentive
It's best to be extra cautious and attentive while you're out with the kids. Don't assume that drivers are paying attention. - Avoid Obstructions to Vision
Dressing up is a lot of fun, and there are endless opportunities for costumes, but try to avoid masks that may obstruct you or your child's vision. It's important to maintain a full line of sight while you're walking around at night. - Get Vaccinated
The COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective. It is also free and easy to access. For individuals seeking to be vaccinated against this disease or more information about the vaccine, please visit www.scph.org/covid. - Maintain Social Distance and Wear a Mask particularly if Unvaccinated
Facial coverings are recommended for those who are not fully vaccinated or in a crowded setting when social distancing cannot be maintained. Costume masks are not an appropriate form of face coverings, and wearing a costume mask in addition to cloth face covering is not recommended. - Carry Hand Sanitizer
Carry sanitizer and use it often, especially after coming in contact with frequently touched surfaces or other people. - If You're Sick, Stay Home
If you or your child are feeling ill, please stay home and do not participate in Halloween activities this year.
According to Akron City Council ordinance, "Trick or Treat Night" in the City of Akron is always the last Saturday in October from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Please respect the decision of neighbors who choose not to participate in Trick or Treat and only approach homes with their porch lights on between the appropriate hours on Trick or Treat Night.
