Akron, Ohio, December 21, 2021 — In August of 2020, Mayor Horrigan announced that the City of Akron was launching the Akronite app to increase civic and community engagement, raise up female- and minority-owned businesses, and help residents connect with local retailers. Since the launch, more than 6,300 users and 270 local businesses have participated in the points-based rewards system for spending dollars locally. The app has also generated $1.18M of local economic impact.

To help celebrate a year of incentivizing users to shop local, the City held the Akronite App First Birthday Contest to give both users and merchants the chance to win a ride on the Goodyear Blimp. Yesterday, Mayor Horrigan was pleased to announce the winners. Kyle Leslie is the winning user and Diamond Deli is the winning merchant. Both have won a Goodyear Blimp ride for a flight over Akron and the surrounding area.
"The Akronite app was initially envisioned as a way to help our local businesses get through the crushing impact of the pandemic, but has proven to be a successful effort to promote and highlight Akron owned businesses," said Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan. "We plan to continue the app into 2022 to further support our small business community and encourage our residents to spend locally."
